Where the boat is each night, and why it is there.

Day 1 — sail before lunch
Picked up between 08:30 and 10:30 — a civilised start compared with a day trip's 05:00. A gentle afternoon of swimming and snorkelling at Kelor and Manjarite, then Kalong Island at dusk for the flying-fox exodus and dinner on deck.
Overnight — the reposition
The skipper moves the boat down to the Padar anchorage while you sleep. This is the entire product: you wake up already there instead of two hours away in Labuan Bajo. It is also the roughest leg of the trip.
Day 2 — sunrise, dragons, mantas
Woken around 04:30 and tendered ashore in the dark for the climb to the Padar ridge at first light. Then Pink Beach, the ranger-guided dragon walk on Komodo Island, and Manta Point when the current allows.
Day 3 — sandbars, then home
Taka Makassar, Siaba, Kanawa and Sebayur before the run back into Labuan Bajo, arriving early to mid-afternoon. Do not book a flight out the same day.

Why 3D2N Is the Komodo Trip the Fleet Is Built For

Two nights is not a luxury on this route. It is the point at which the itinerary stops being fragile.

Almost every wooden boat working out of Labuan Bajo is set up to run three days and two nights. Cabins, meal plans, crew rotations and the stop list are all built around that shape, which is a good reason to take it seriously: it is the format the local fleet is genuinely optimised for rather than one stretched to fit.

The second morning is what you are paying for

The obvious sell is the Padar sunrise, and it is real — a boat that slept in the park puts you on the ridge before the light comes up, which no day boat crossing from Labuan Bajo can do.

But the more valuable thing is subtler. A three-day itinerary has two mornings in the park, and the Komodo route needs a spare one.

Manta Point is the stop that most often gets cut, because it is a current-driven cleaning station and a responsible skipper will not put snorkellers into water that is running too hard. On a day trip a dropped stop is simply gone. On a 2D1N trip it is gone too — there is only one morning. On a 3D2N trip the skipper can try again the next day. That is the difference between an itinerary and a hope, and it is why the price step from two days to three buys more than the extra night suggests.

What three days actually covers

Eight to ten stops, against four to six on a day trip. A typical route runs Kelor, Manjarite and Kalong Island on day one; Padar at sunrise, Pink Beach, Komodo Island and Manta Point on day two; and Taka Makassar, Siaba, Kanawa and Sebayur on day three.

The pace also changes character. A day trip is a transfer schedule; three days is a sailing trip with stops in it. There are long stretches of nothing but deck and water, which most guests end up describing as the best part.

The tiers, and what separates them

Every 3D2N boat sails broadly the same route, so the price differences are almost entirely about the cabin and the boat.

Two costs regularly sit outside the headline price, and one of them is easy to miss.

The Komodo National Park permit is excluded on essentially every liveaboard. On a multi-day trip that adds up — foreign visitors pay IDR 250,000 marine park entry per day plus a IDR 25,000 harbour fee, with ranger fees charged per group ashore, so budget in the region of IDR 650,000 to 750,000 across a three-day trip. Since 1 April 2026 it also has to be pre-booked through the government’s SiOra system two to three days ahead, under a hard daily quota. Who should book something else

If you have one day, book the day trip — three days is not a better version of it, it is a different trip. If you have two, the 2D1N still gets you the sunrise for around $145 less. And if you are travelling as a couple or a family and want the boat to yourselves, read the private page first: the pricing on charters here does not behave the way most people assume.
