Komodo Island Day Trip

From $88 per person for a shared boat covering Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo Island and Manta Point, rising to about $95–$130 for speedboat itineraries with more stops and $177 for a luxury open-deck boat that stays out for the Kalong Island sunset. The Komodo National Park permit is extra on almost every listing — foreign visitors pay IDR 250,000 marine park entry plus a IDR 25,000 harbour fee, with ranger fees charged per group ashore. Most boats collect you from your hotel between 05:00 and 06:00 and return in the late afternoon or early evening — around ten hours in total. A few operators sail later, at 07:00, and are back by 17:00. The early departure is deliberate: it puts you on the Padar ridge close to first light, before the climb gets hot and before the rest of the fleet arrives.

Four stops are near-universal — the Padar Island viewpoint climb, Pink Beach for swimming and snorkelling, a ranger-guided dragon walk on Komodo or Rinca Island, and a snorkelling stop. Most itineraries also attempt Manta Point. Speedboat trips often add Taka Makassar's sandbar, Kanawa Island or Siaba, reaching six to eight stops in the same day.

For most visitors, yes. A day trip reaches every sight the park is famous for and fits inside a short stop in Labuan Bajo. What it does not buy is margin: a single day gives the skipper no second attempt, so a rough morning simply removes a stop. It also cannot put you on Padar before sunrise, because day boats are still crossing from Labuan Bajo when the light comes up. If either of those matters, a 2D1N trip is the smallest upgrade that fixes it.

Sightings on Komodo and Rinca are reliable — rangers know where the animals rest and lead groups to them daily — but they are wild animals in a national park rather than a zoo exhibit, so nothing is scripted. You walk a marked trail with a licensed ranger who sets the distance and carries a forked staff. Independent walking is not permitted anywhere on the trekking islands.

Possibly, and it is genuinely the stop most often dropped. Manta Point is a cleaning station that works because of current, and when the current runs too hard a responsible skipper will not put snorkellers in the water. Sightings are most reliable from May to October and again from December to February, but no operator on this route can guarantee them. A speedboat covers the distance between stops fast enough to fit six to eight of them into one day and arrives ahead of the slower fleet. A wooden boat gets you four or five stops but gives you shade, deck space and somewhere to lie down. Over a ten-hour day that comfort matters more than the itinerary difference suggests, so it comes down to whether you would rather see more or travel better.

Reasonably fit. The Padar climb is a stepped trail of roughly 20 to 30 minutes to the main viewpoint, but it is steep, exposed and unshaded. Snorkelling stops are made from the boat in open water rather than off a beach. Most operators list the trip as unsuitable for non-swimmers, for travellers with mobility or back problems, and for pregnant women.

The crossing between Padar and Komodo Island is the exposed leg and it does build, particularly in the January-to-February wet season and again around August when the trade winds are strongest. Take a motion-sickness tablet before you leave the hotel rather than once you start to feel it — on a small boat there is nowhere to go, and a bad crossing colours the whole day.

Since 1 April 2026, someone does — and two to three days ahead. The park operates a 1,000-visitor daily quota allocated per site, and all entries are issued through the government's SiOra system. Walk-in tickets have been eliminated and permits are non-refundable and non-transferable. Some operators now handle the booking and bundle the cost; most still expect you to arrange it. Ask before you book, not on the morning.

No. Boats regularly return later than scheduled because the itinerary bends around weather, and Komodo Airport's flights are almost all early to mid-afternoon. Give yourself a night in Labuan Bajo after any boat trip. The same applies at the front end: an afternoon arrival flight does not leave enough margin for a 05:00 pickup the next morning if it is delayed.

Closed shoes with grip for the Padar climb, swimwear, a towel, a sun hat, reef-safe sunscreen, a light layer for the sail home, and rupiah in cash for park and ranger fees. Most operators supply snorkelling gear, life jackets, lunch and drinking water. A dry bag is worth having for phones and cameras — most stops are wet landings from the boat.
